But first, just a few housekeeping items before we start…
If any of you are joining here for the first time on Day 6, welcome! During our first week, we got in the right mindset, set some goals, sketched out a learning plan, picked just the right business name, and nailed down our business structure. If you missed them, no worries! But I would suggest you at least go back and catch up on Days 4 and 5 before jumping into today’s topic (as you will need the information from those days to complete your business registration today).
Then, if you’d rather catch up on Days 1-3 later, or do them first, it is totally up to you - There is no right or wrong way as this is YOUR creative journey! I'll be here daily with new posts packed with fresh insights, resources and guidance as you work your way through the 30-Days to Your Creative Business Journal.
And one last thing before we begin… It’s important to note that while I am a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), I'm not your CPA. The information provided in this blog should not be construed as accounting or legal advice as this is intended to be general guidance. There may be circumstances specific to you that would need tailored advice in your jurisdiction. I am personally from Colorado in the U.S., but other states and other countries will have their own sets of rules and laws. If you have queries or need assistance, always reach out to your own legal or accounting professional to make sure you’re making the best decisions for your specific circumstances in your particular jurisdiction. They are equipped to help you with your own unique situation.
And with that, let’s dig in…
Introduction
Let’s Talk Tax IDs
- Why You Need An EIN: You’re going to need this little number for quite a few things. Want to open a bank account in your business's name? You'll need an EIN. Hiring your first employee or ready to file your business taxes? Yep, you guessed it - you need an EIN!
- Getting Your EIN: Don't sweat, getting an EIN is as simple as hopping onto the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website and applying online. Then you're all set, and ready to take on the business world!
State and Local Taxes, Unraveled
- Sales Tax: Is your product or service subject to sales tax? If the answer's yes, make friends with the right state agency. They'll guide you on how to collect and remit sales tax, keeping you on the right side of the law.
- Property Tax: Here's a heads-up! Depending on how you've set up your business, property tax might just land on your lap. This applies to any real estate or personal property your business owns. So, keep an eye out for that.
- Franchise Tax: Lastly, let's talk about the franchise tax. Some states have a habit of charging an annual franchise tax or a similar fee on businesses. So, make sure you're not caught off guard by that.
Necessary Business Permits and Licenses
Alright, let's get down to business - permits and licenses. More often than not, you'll need to snag a handful of these to operate your business legitimately. For example, if you're plotting to sell taxable goods or services, a Sales Tax License will be on your must-have list. So, in the grand scheme of things, getting familiar with which permits and licenses apply to your business can be pretty essential. It's like learning the rules of the game before you start playing, right? Makes things a whole lot smoother.
Keeping Registrations Fresh and Up-To-Date
Wrapping It All Up With Some Practical Tips for Successful Registration
- Claiming Your Business Name: On Day 4, you locked down a unique business name and its corresponding domain. First impressions do matter!
- Picking the Right Business Structure: On Day 5, you figured out the right structure for your exciting venture - a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation or a limited liability company. It’s like picking the right outfit for an occasion - you want to make sure it fits your business just right.
- Grabbing an EIN: Even if you're a lone wolf in your business, getting an EIN is a smart move. It's like having a separate wallet for your business, making tax time a breeze.
- Getting Familiar with State and Local Taxes: Taxes, I know, they can be daunting! But becoming pals with your state and local tax obligations will save you from surprise bills. When in doubt, don't hesitate to ask a tax professional for advice.
- Securing Permits and Licenses: Before you hit the go button, make sure you're not missing any permits or licenses. You wouldn't want to invite any legal trouble, would you?
- Staying on Top of Renewals: Keep a handy calendar or set reminders for when renewals are due. You certainly don't want to drop the ball on this one!
