Now, let's go...

Defining Your Business Identity

Before we start tossing around names, let's press the pause button and have a little heart-to-heart. What makes your business stand out from the crowd? What's that secret sauce that gives it its unique flavor? Ponder about your unique selling points, what values you hold dear, and the mission that propels you forward. This soul-searching is the bedrock of your business identity and it's gonna help you cook up a name that rings with your passion and purpose.

Creative Brainstorming

Now that we've got our unique business vibe in mind, let's get those creative juices flowing! It's time to dream up some potential names for your venture. Why not rally up a few of your most trusted friends or colleagues for a good ol' brainstorming session? Different viewpoints can spark some pretty cool name ideas. The trick is to think of a name that sticks in people's minds, rolls off the tongue nicely, and of course, makes sense for the kind of business you're in.

Real-World Examples

Let's look at a few real-world examples of some big companies and their naming stories:

  1. Google: Believe it or not, the name is a cheeky spin-off of the word "googol", which is the mathematical name for 1 followed by 100 zeros. Seems like a pretty clever way to hint at their goal of managing the internet's infinite information!
  2. Amazon: Jeff Bezos went big and named it after the world's largest river. That's one way to express your colossal vision for your company's future!
  3. Nike: Named after the Greek goddess of victory, it ties in their brand to athletic triumph. Fascinating how much a name can reflect, isn't it?

Legal Considerations

Alright, here's the lowdown on the legal stuff. Remember what I said at the top that I'm not a lawyer, but I can guide you through some steps to consider as you consider your business name and making it legit.

  • Trademark Search: First, you'll want to do a trademark search, just to make sure your business name isn't already shining in someone else's spotlight.
  • Trademark Registration: If your name is unique, consider registering your business name as a trademark to protect your brand. This involves applying through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Domain Name Availability: You'll want to stake your claim on the internet. Double-check that your chosen business name is available as a web domain.
  • DBA Filing: If you're using a different name for your business, you may need to file a "Doing Business As" (DBA) with the local or state authorities.
  • Business Name Registration: And finally, to make it all truly official, you've got to register your business name with the relevant governmental body. (We will go over registering with appropriate state/local authorities on Day 6 and obtaining a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) on Day 7.)

Keep in mind, these are general pointers and each state might have their own rules. Oh, and don't forget! I'm not a lawyer or your CPA, so always check with you legal or tax professional to get advice tailored to your situation. It's all about crossing your T's and dotting your I's!

Additional Resources

Here's a nifty list of tools and websites that could be of help to you in your business naming journey:
