Hello fellow creatives!

It’s been about two months since I made the leap from Adobe Creative Cloud to the Affinity suite of products, and I thought it was about time to share an update on how things are going. If you caught my first post on the switch, you know I was excited yet nervous about leaving Adobe behind – especially since I had been so deeply accustomed to using Photoshop and Illustrator in my creative process. (If you haven't yet read my first post on the change, you can read it here.) Now, after a couple of months with Affinity, I can honestly say I couldn’t be happier with the change. Here's why.

The Transition and What I Missed from Adobe

When my Adobe subscription ended, I decided not to renew it, mainly due to the high cost and my concerns over Adobe’s new Terms of Service. So, I took the plunge and purchased the entire Affinity suite – Designer, Photo, and Publisher – and I haven’t looked back. Sure, there are a few things I miss about Adobe. For example, Illustrator’s color picker tool was a favorite of mine, and Photoshop's “pattern preview” was pretty convenient. Not to mention all the AI functionality Adobe is pushing these days.

But even with these minor losses, I’ve found that Affinity has more than made up for it with its own unique capabilities.

Affinity’s Workarounds and Surprises

I was nervous about whether I'd be able to replicate all my old workflows, but I quickly found that Affinity has solutions – and sometimes, even better ways of doing things. Here are a few examples:

• Raster and Vector: One of the things I love about Affinity Designer is how easily it handles both raster and vector elements. One of the best features is the concept of "Personas." Let me give you an example: when I'm creating a pattern in Affinity Designer (similar to Adobe Illustrator), I can work with both vector and raster/pixel images for my designs. While in the Designer Persona, I have all the vector tools and menus available, and if I need to edit any pixel-based items, I just switch to the Photo Persona to access the pixel tools and menus from Affinity Photo (similar to Adobe Photoshop). I can even apply pixel modifications to vector items, like adding a pixel-based texture to a vector shape. This flexibility makes my creative process so much smoother.

• Recolor Adjustment Layer: When working with vector shapes, recoloring is a breeze. But, recoloring pixel images was always a bit of a chore in Photoshop. Maybe I missed this one in Photoshop before, but in Affinity, you can apply a "Recolor" adjustment to a pixel layer and type in the HSL (Hue, Saturation, Levels) of the exact color you want. This has been a game-changer in the way I work with raster files to recolor.

• Live Pattern Preview: Seeing and testing my seamless patterns with Photoshop's Pattern Preview tool was nice. But, with just a little setup, I discovered that I could have a live pattern preview in Affinity Designer that works just as well (if not better!). It takes some initial setup, but once it’s ready, it feels like I’m right back in the groove with my pattern work.

And that’s not all – Affinity brought some unexpected surprises to the table:

• Switching Personas: The ability to switch between Designer, Photo, and Publisher “personas” across the Affinity suite is fantastic. It’s like having all the tools you need at your fingertips, no matter which app you’re working in. It’s a level of integration I didn’t know I needed, but now I don’t want to live without.

• Affinity Publisher vs. Adobe InDesign: I used to use Adobe InDesign quite a bit, and I have to say – Affinity Publisher is, in my opinion, hands-down better. It’s so user-friendly, and I love how well it integrates with Designer and Photo. It makes my workflow feel cohesive, instead of fragmented across different tools.

The Price Tag and Corporate Culture

I was waiting to see if Adobe might offer me a “deal” after my subscription expired, but they never did. To be honest, I wasn’t really thrilled with Adobe as a corporate citizen, so I didn’t feel inclined to give them more of my money. Affinity’s pricing, on the other hand, was a breath of fresh air. Their six-month free trial came at just the right time for me, and before my trial was up, I was more than happy to purchase the entire suite – especially since they were offering 50% off at that time.

The Canva Acquisition – What’s Next for Affinity?

Recently, Serif (Affinity’s parent company) was purchased by Canva, and there has been a lot of speculation about what this could mean for Affinity going forward. I know change can sometimes be concerning, especially when it comes to the tools we rely on. But Affinity put out a statement reassuring users that they wouldn’t be changing their current business model, which is a one-time purchase instead of a subscription. I do expect that Canva will probably add new options or features that can be purchased separately, but for now, I’m just happy with how things are.

Final Thoughts

After two months of working with Affinity, I’m thrilled with the switch. The transition has been smoother than I expected, and I’ve found that Affinity not only matches my old Adobe workflow but, in many ways, improves upon it. The tools are powerful, easy to use, and have helped me stay creative without the stress of a steep subscription cost hanging over my head.

I’ve learned that change, especially when it involves stepping away from something so familiar, can be daunting. But it can also open up new possibilities and give us exactly what we need. Affinity has done that for me, and I’m excited to see where this new chapter takes me.

If you’re on the fence about making a change, I encourage you to take the leap. At least take them up on the 6-month free trial. You might just find that what’s waiting for you on the other side is even better than you imagined.

As Robin Sharma once said, 'Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end.'

Thanks for joining me on this journey of navigating change. Until next time, keep creating and embracing all the wonderful changes that come your way!

1. Plan Ahead

The first thing I'm focusing on is planning. I’ve been dedicating time this week to map out my Pinterest strategy and scheduling my pins in advance. This way, I can maintain a steady flow of pins without feeling overwhelmed, and I can breathe easy knowing that my Pinterest pins activity will remain consistent.

2. Create a Content Calendar

One of my favorite things is organization, and what better way to keep organized than to have a well-structured content calendar. I'm setting up a detailed calendar to plan out themes, designs, and posting dates. This will help me to stay on track and ensure that there is both variety and consistency to my pins.

Currently, I use AirTable to manage my pattern database, and so far I have just added fields to track Pinterest Pin information for each of my patterns. But, I've heard so many great things about Tailwind for automating pin scheduling, so I may give that a try to streamline my process. I'll keep you updated on how it works out!

3. Design with Intent

I'm crafting each pin to make sure they are both eye-catching and true to my brand’s style. I am trying to focus on creating visually appealing and cohesive pins that not only showcase my work but also inspire and engage my audience. High-quality images with clear, compelling descriptions are crucial for grabbing the reader's attention and making a lasting impression.

One tool I use quite a bit is Canva. At first, I was hesitant to use Canva, feeling that as an artist and surface designer, I should create everything from scratch. However, the ease and efficiency Canva offers are undeniable, and I've now embraced it as a way to streamline my design process. If there's something that can save valuable time, why not use it, right? It's a great tool for quickly producing polished and professional-looking graphics.

4. Schedule Smartly

Scheduling pins in advance is definitely key for maintaining consistency. Who has time to pin in real-time? Pinterest allows you to schedule pins 30 days in advance through the Pinterest app, which is what I've done in the past when manually pinning. However, I'm hoping that by utilizing Tailwind, I'll be able to better automate the posting process, allowing me more time to focus on other aspects of my marketing strategy. This approach should help me stay on top of my game and ensure that my content is regularly updated.

5. Monitor and Adjust

Marketing is an ongoing process. Once my pins are live, I’ll be monitoring their performance and engagement... analyzing what clicks (pun intended) and what doesn’t. This will help me refine my strategy so I can make adjustments as needed. It's all about learning and evolving - just like my art!

6. Stay Authentic

While scheduling and planning are crucial, staying true to me is equally important. I'm trying to make sure my pins reflect my true creative voice and resonate with my audience, helping me to connect with my audience so that my marketing efforts don't feel like a sales pitch.

Pinterest is a fantastic platform for showcasing your creativity and reaching a wider audience. With a bit of planning ahead, designing thoughtfully, and staying consistent, you, too, can navigate the art of marketing with confidence and clarity.

1. Embrace Time Blocking

Time blocking is a technique where you allocate specific blocks of time to particular tasks or activities. For someone like me, who can easily get hyper-focused, this method helps me ensure that I don’t spend an entire day on one project while neglecting others. I set up dedicated blocks for different tasks—whether it’s creating art, updating my blog, or spending time with family. By assigning clear time slots, I maintain a structured workflow and make steady progress on all fronts.

2. Plan Your "Must-Dos"

Over the years, I’ve adopted a term from my son’s kindergarten days: "must-do's." These are the essential tasks that need to be accomplished each day. Whether it’s finishing a design, answering client emails, or tackling household chores, having a list of these must-do's helps me prioritize and allocate my time effectively. I make a list every morning and ensure that these crucial tasks are addressed before moving on to less critical activities.

3. Break Tasks into Manageable Chunks

Large projects can feel overwhelming, so breaking them down into smaller, more manageable tasks makes them feel more achievable. By scheduling time blocks for these smaller chunks, I can make consistent progress without feeling buried under the weight of a massive task. This approach also allows for flexibility if unexpected tasks come up.

4. Set Time Limits for Each Block

While diving deep into a task is often necessary, it’s important to set a limit on how long you spend on each time block. I use timers to remind me when it's time to switch tasks. This helps me stay on track and prevents one project from dominating my entire day.

5. Build in Breaks

No matter how focused you are, regular breaks are essential for maintaining productivity and creativity. I schedule short breaks between time blocks to recharge and avoid burnout. These moments of rest help me return to tasks with renewed energy and a fresh perspective.

6. Reflect and Adjust

At the end of each day, I take a few moments to reflect on what I’ve accomplished and what didn’t go as planned. This reflection helps me adjust my time management strategies for the following day, ensuring continuous improvement and a better balance between tasks.

7. Stay Flexible

Even the best-laid plans can sometimes go awry. Being flexible with my schedule allows me to adapt when unexpected events or urgent tasks arise. Time management isn’t about rigidly sticking to a plan; it’s about creating a structure that can accommodate change while keeping you on track.

Mastering time management is an ongoing journey, but with techniques like time blocking and a clear plan for daily must-do's, you can stay productive without letting any important tasks fall by the wayside. To all my fellow creatives out there, finding a time management method that works for you can make all the difference in achieving your goals while maintaining a balanced life.

For many of us, hyper-focus is a double-edged sword. It fuels our creativity and drives us to achieve remarkable things, but it can also lead to an imbalanced life if we're not careful. Here’s how I navigate the fine line between productive passion and workaholism, and what you might consider if you find yourself in the same boat:

1. Recognize the Signs of Workaholism

When our focus becomes so intense that it overshadows other important aspects of life—like relationships, self-care, or personal well-being—it’s time to take a step back. Workaholism often shows up as a constant drive to keep working, even at the expense of our health or relationships. If you’re finding that your enthusiasm is causing stress or fatigue, it might be time to reassess your approach.

2. Set Clear Boundaries

One of the most challenging aspects of hyper-focus is setting boundaries. It’s easy to lose track of time and forget about other responsibilities when you’re in the zone. Establish specific work hours and stick to them, just as you would with any other job. Make time for breaks and ensure that you have designated times for family, friends, and self-care.

3. Prioritize Your Tasks

When you’re deeply engrossed in a project, it’s easy to let other tasks slide. Prioritizing your to-do list can help you manage your focus more effectively. Break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable chunks and set realistic deadlines. This can help you maintain a sense of progress without getting overwhelmed or neglecting other important areas.

4. Practice Mindfulness

Being mindful of your working habits can help you stay balanced. Take moments throughout your day to check in with yourself. Are you feeling stressed or disconnected from other parts of your life? Mindfulness practices, like meditation or journaling, can provide insights into how your focus is affecting you and help you recalibrate if needed.

5. Communicate Openly

If your hyper-focus is impacting those around you, it’s important to communicate openly. Let your loved ones know when you need to dive deep into a project, but also acknowledge the need for balance. Regular check-ins with them can help ensure that your work doesn’t come at the expense of your relationships.

6. Celebrate Your Achievements

While hyper-focus can sometimes lead to neglecting other areas, it’s important to celebrate the progress you make. Recognize and reward yourself for completing tasks and reaching milestones. This not only boosts your motivation but also helps you appreciate the journey, not just the end result.

7. Seek Feedback

Sometimes, an external perspective can offer valuable insights. Talk to mentors, colleagues, or friends about how your focus is affecting your work and life. They can provide feedback and suggestions that might help you find a better balance.

Navigating the art of hyper-focus requires a delicate balance. It’s about harnessing the power of your intense focus while ensuring that it doesn’t lead to burnout or strain your relationships. By setting boundaries, prioritizing tasks, and staying mindful, you can channel your enthusiasm into productive energy without losing sight of what’s truly important.

"The key to success is not in doing extraordinary things, but in doing ordinary things extraordinarily well." — John W. Gardner

To my fellow hyper-focused creatives, remember that our greatest work often comes from a place of balance and well-being. Here’s to finding that balance, one focused step at a time!

I'll be honest – I was a bit nervous about making such a change. Adobe had been my go-to for so long, and I had become so familiar with its tools and workflows. The thought of starting over with new software did NOT sound fun to me. However, since Affinity announced they were extending a generous free trial (6 months, even if you previously had a free trial), I decided to give it a try.

So, I dove into Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo (I haven't yet tried Affinity Publisher), and let me tell you, in less than a week, I am more than sold. Not only did these programs meet my expectations, but they also far exceeded them. And for the way I use these tools as a surface designer, I actually like Affinity Designer BETTER than my old Adobe workflow. (Can you say, "Live Pattern Preview"???) It’s been a revelation, and it got me thinking about the broader theme of change and how, if we're open to it, change can be a good thing.

Embracing Change

Change can be scary, especially when it involves stepping out of our comfort zones. But here's the thing: change is often where the magic happens. When we embrace change, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and opportunities for growth. Switching from Adobe to Affinity was a significant change for me, and it has been incredibly rewarding so far.

Overcoming Fear

One of the biggest hurdles to embracing change is fear – fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of not being able to adapt. I had all these fears when I considered switching to Affinity. Would I be able to do all the things I had become so familiar with in Adobe? Would the new tools be intuitive? Would it disrupt my creative flow?

The reality is that fear is a natural part of the process. It’s okay to feel nervous or unsure. The important thing is to push through that fear and give yourself the chance to discover what’s on the other side. For me, the switch to Affinity turned out to be a positive and empowering experience.

Discovering New Strengths

One of the most exciting aspects of embracing change is discovering new strengths and capabilities. Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo have not only matched what I could do in Adobe but have also introduced me to new features and workflows that have enhanced my creativity. It’s been a journey of rediscovery, and I’ve found that I’m more productive and inspired than ever before.

A Better Fit

Sometimes, change leads us to something that fits us better. While Adobe was a fantastic tool, Affinity has proven to be a better fit for my needs and style. The intuitive interface, powerful features, and affordability make it an excellent choice for artists like me. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the things we fear losing aren’t as indispensable as we think, and what we gain can be even more valuable.

Staying Open to Change

The key to navigating change is staying open-minded and flexible. The creative world is always evolving, and as artists, we need to be adaptable. Whether it’s trying new tools, exploring different techniques, or shifting our approach, staying open to change keeps us dynamic and innovative.

Final Thoughts

Switching from Adobe Creative Cloud to Affinity was a big change, but it was a change worth making. It has revitalized my creative process and opened up new possibilities. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that change, while challenging, can lead to incredible growth and new opportunities.

And, yes, I know Serif (Affinity) was recently purchased by Canva, and we do not yet know what change that may entail for the future of Affinity. But that is a change for another day...

As we continue our creative journeys, let’s remember to embrace change with an open heart and mind. Who knows what amazing things await us on the other side?

Despite the passage of those years, it was as if time had stood still. Meeting our friends again, it felt like we had just seen them yesterday. Sure, there were a few more wrinkles on our faces and a couple of gray hairs (OK, maybe more than a couple!), but in our eyes, everyone looked the same. This experience was a great reminder that the essence of true friendships endures, irrespective of time and distance.

The entire journey reminded me of the parallels of art and creativity. Much like picking up a paintbrush after a long hiatus or exploring a new medium like watercolours instead of the usual acrylics, reconnecting with old friends brought back familiar feelings, albeit with a touch of rustiness (our French-speaking skills weren't the same as when we once lived there!). It might take some time to find your rhythm again, but once you do, the joy and comfort that return are immeasurable.

I encourage you to dive into your own creative journey. Dust off those old art supplies you haven't used in a while or explore a new medium. Revisit the feelings they stir within you and embrace the transition. You might be surprised at how quickly the old familiarity comes back.

Here's to embracing new beginnings and reconnecting with cherished parts of our past!

This week, our family is celebrating a big milestone: my eldest son graduated from high school. As a proud, yet slightly anxious parent, I'm finding my way through an entirely new landscape. From orientation to registering for classes and applying for housing to meeting new roommates, it all feels excitingly overwhelming. And yes, I’m talking about me, not just my son!

The whirlwind of activities has brought back memories of my own college days—packing up my stuff, saying goodbye to childhood friends, and stepping into a world that was both a bit scary and super exciting. I remember the first time I walked into my dorm room, curious about who my new roommate would be and wondering how we’d get along. Now, seeing it from the other side, it’s a fun reminder of how life comes full circle.

Change can be a bit scary, but it's also super exciting. I just know my son is going to have an amazing time at college, full of invaluable learning experiences, both academic and personal. In those moments between classes and studying, he'll be making friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. And it's not just him feeling the wave of transition; we parents feel it too.

Reflecting on my journey, I think of my own big transition this past year. After more than two decades in an established accounting career, I took a leap of faith to become a solo-preneur artist and surface designer. The fear of the unknown was real – worrying about success, the judgment of others, and the challenges ahead. Yet, this transition has turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I now spend my days in my home office/art studio, drawing, painting, and designing for my job – something that used to be just for fun. The joy I get from my daily "work" is beyond words, even if calling it "work" feels a bit strange.

The freedom to create has opened up new avenues for self-expression that I had long neglected. I’ve rediscovered the joy of trying new things and watching my ideas come to life and grow. Every piece of art and design I make carries a part of my journey, making each one special. As I'm just starting out in this new career, my main goal for 2024 is to CREATE. This word captures everything I'm aiming for this year. Balancing creativity with life's other obligations can be tricky, but I cherish every moment I get to spend on my passion. What once seemed daunting has smoothly become part of my everyday life. And I'm sure that after his first semester or two, my son will feel just as settled into his new college life routine. too.

Let's embrace our transitions with open hearts and minds, ready to grow and thrive in our new chapters. Here's to the amazing journey ahead, for both my son and me, and for anyone else navigating their own transitions.

Yet, as the months have flown by, I've come to realize that the path to success isn't as straight and smooth as we envision. Life tends to throw us curveballs, pushing us off track and testing our dreams, but that's all part of the adventure.

This year so far, through much trial and error, I've been learning the invaluable art of setting realistic goals – the kind that inspire without overwhelming, challenge without discouraging. Here's what I've figured out so far along the way:

Flexibility Is Key

Setting goals isn't about etching them in stone; it's about sculpting them from clay, molding and shaping them as we move through life's changing scenes. As we grow and learn, our dreams and how we get there might change, and that's totally okay! When we hit a bump in the road, which is pretty much guaranteed on any journey worth taking, it's important to stay adaptable.

Changing our plans isn't a weakness; it actually shows how committed we are to reaching our big goals. Success isn't about sticking rigidly to a plan; it's about how we keep pushing forward, no matter what. By keeping an open mind, we give ourselves the chance to seize new opportunities, learn from what happens, and, in the end, find a path that’s not only rewarding but also true to who we are and what we believe in.

In the end, it's the resilience of our spirit, not the stiffness of our goals, that truly drives us forward.

Find Your Balance

While it's tempting to aim for the stars and dream big, it's really important to keep our feet firmly planted on the solid ground of reality. Of course, setting goals that challenge us and stretch our capabilities is necessary for our personal growth and development. But, it's also important to keep a sense of balance and perspective in our lives. By finding thThis way, hitting our goals becomes way more doable, and the journey towards them is packed with learning and feeling good about our progress.at perfect balance between dreaming big and keeping it real, we make sure our goals are always within our grasp.

Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection

When chasing our dreams, we often get caught up in reaching that distant finish line, thinking success is all about sticking strictly to our original plan. We tend to see success as this straight line, dotted with specific goals we set out to hit. But really, the good stuff – the joy and fulfillment – isn't just in ticking off those boxes (although I do love a good to-do list with all the boxes checked off!). It's really in the journey itself – those little steps forward, the lessons we pick up from messing up and trying again, and pushing past those hurdles we thought we'd never get over.

By celebrating every win, not matter how big or small, we build up this amazing sense of gratitude and resilience. It helps us to enjoy the ride, seeing the beauty in how we grow and change. It's about celebrating progress over waiting for perfection, feeling proud and content with each step we take. This shift in how we think is ket to getting us through the ups and downs, lighting the way when our goals feel out of reach.

Plus, this outlook lets us really understand our strengths and weaknesses, seeing each challenge as a chance to grow, not a setback. This way of looking at success, focusing on gratitude and bouncing back, turns our journey into something way more meaningful and fun. It’s about seeing every experience, good or bad, as a part of our big story of getting somewhere better.

As we navigate the art of setting realistic goals, let's remember the words of wisdom from Henry David Thoreau:

"What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals."

At the end of the day, it's not about where we end up, but the journey – how we grow, change, and never stop chasing our dreams.

Cheers to setting goals that inspire us, push our limits, and lift us to new heights – and to loving the beautiful, messy, super rewarding journey of becoming the artists we're meant to be.

With so many online courses just a click away, all promising to teach me new skills and perspectives, I've happily piled up a hefty stack of stuff to learn. But now, my "to-complete" list looks more daunting than my art projects.

The real challenge isn't just ticking these courses off my list; it's about soaking up all this knowledge and pouring it into my art without turning into the ultimate paradox—an over-educated under-achiever!

Here's my take on mastering the art of learning in a way that boosts my creativity instead of bogging it down:

Prioritize Learning Goals

With so many courses out there, figuring out what to focus on first has become my first step. I take a little time to see how each course lines up with what I'm aiming to achieve artistically at the moment. Basically, I'm asking, "Is this course going to make my art better right now or pretty soon?" If it's a yes,  it moves up the list.

Set a Learning Schedule

Setting aside specific times for learning really helps me keep a good balance between education and creation. I block out certain hours or days just for hitting the books, leaving the rest of my time free for hands-on art practice. This way, I make sure all that learning doesn’t eat up the precious time I need to actually create stuff.

Implement as You Learn

The real magic happens when you start implementing things. After completing a course or a module, I immediately look for ways to incorporate these new techniques or ideas into my art. This "learn by doing" approach really cements my new skills and helps me avoid getting trapped in that endless learning loop.

Realizing that learning never stops has been liberating. It means I don’t have to rush to know everything all at once, and I don’t need to finish every single course to feel 'qualified' to create. This change in perspective has helped me pick what I learn more wisely and really concentrate on using what I already know.

Reflect on Progress

Taking some time to reflect on how my art has changed thanks to these courses really keeps me going. It's pretty easy to overlook just how much we've learned and grown when we're constantly on the lookout for the next thing to learn. Pausing to look back at past work and seeing how much I've learned not only shows me how valuable they've been for me but also helps me figure out what I want to learn next.

Know When to Step Back

Have you ever caught yourself thinking you were busy learning, but really you're just procrastinating? It's so easy to trick yourself into thinking you're being productive and fall into the "just one more course" trap. Sometimes, you just need to pause and ask yourself, "Am I taking these courses to avoid the actual work of creating?" A bit of honest self-reflection helps me to figure out when it's time for me to hit the pause button on learning and start actually creating.

Share Your Knowledge

One of the best parts about learning is getting to share all the cool stuff you've learned with others. Whether it’s teaching, working together, or just chatting about ideas with fellow artists, sharing doesn’t just help to understand things better.  It also builds a sense of community and helps us all grow together.

Navigating the art of learning while dedicating a year to creating art has been quite the journey. But, by figuring out what's most important, planning my time, actually doing the work, thinking about how it's going, and knowing when to take a step back, I'm hoping to find that sweet spot. It's still an on-going struggle for me, but I'm hoping I can better grow as an artist without drowning in information. The main thing to remember is that all this learning should make our creative expression better, not get in the way.

Here's to being lifelong learners and creators, always changing and improving our craft!

In this whirlwind of creation and promotion - learning all I can, creating as much art as possible, constantly updating social media, and keeping my blog alive - I've come to realize something pretty important. Chasing success as an artist has slowly begun to consume every waking moment of my life. It's exciting for sure, but it's also unsustainable. I know I need to find time for family, self-care, household chores, and just living life. But how do you pause when every part of you believes that success is just around the corner, if only you push a little harder?

The truth is, finding work-life balance as a full-time artist isn't just about managing time; it's about managing energy, expectations, and emotions.  Here's what I've learned on my ongoing journey to find that sweet spot and achieve balance:

Accept That Balance is Fluid

Work-life balance isn't a perfect 50/50 split. Some days, my art will demand more of me; other days, life will need more attention. Recognizing that balance is fluid has helped me soften the guilt when I can't split myself evenly between my art and everything else in my life.

Set Clear Boundaries

This one is tough for me. When your "studio" is right next to the family room, where do you draw the line? For me, setting physical and time boundaries has been key. I set 'studio hours' and try my best to keep them, just like I set aside specific times for family, self-care, and household chores.

Prioritize

Not everything needs to be done now or even today. Learning how to prioritize has been a game-changer for me Some days, it's all about cranking out new work, but then there are other days when it's okay if updating social media waits so I can hang out with my loved ones or simply chill and recharge.

Learn to Say No

Saying no is an art in itself. At first, I was worried about missing out on opportunities if I didn't jump on every opportunity, collaboration, or event. But I quickly realized that trying to do it all only watered down quality of my work and wasn't great for my well-being either. Now, I take a moment to think about how each opportunity fits with what's currently on my plate and I'm not afraid to say no when necessary.

Self-Care is Non-Negotiable

I've learned this the hard way. If I don't make time for self-care, everything else suffers - my art, my relationships, and my health. Self-care isn't just about spa days; it can be as simple as taking a walk, reading a good book, or practicing mindfulness. It's all about doing something that fills me up, both physically and emotionally.

Celebrate the Small Wins

In the relentless pursuit of success, it's easy to overlook the small victories. Every piece of art we finish, every kind word on social media, every small sale - they all matter. Celebrating these moments helps me see how far I've come and motivates me to keep going, without burning out.

Seek Support

Finally, I've learned that it's totally okay to ask for help. Whether it's delegating chores, asking for feedback on my work, or just needing someone to chat with, having a support network has been invaluable. It's nice to remember that I don't have to do this all by myself.

Balancing the demands of a full-time art career with the rest of life's responsibilities is definitely a continuous process. It requires making those little tweaks, being in tune with yourself, and having the courage to treat your well-being as importantly as your professional goals. While I haven't got this balance just right, I'm all in for trying, knowing that a sustainable art career depends not just on my creativity, but also on my ability to live a balanced and happy life too.

To my fellow artists struggling to find that perfect balance, just know you're not alone. Remember, our best work comes not from pushing ourselves to the limit, but from a place of passion, joy, and well-being.

Here's to finding our balance, one brushstroke at a time!

Wondering how to keep your creative spark alive in the digital age? 🌟 Read on as I discuss how you can master the art of social media without losing your artistic soul.

Navigating the world of social media can feel a bit like exploring a maze, where each turn brings new challenges, surprises, and opportunities. The good news is, platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook are amazing spaces for artists, creators, and innovators to share their work, connect with their audience in real ways, and find new roads to success. These digital playgrounds are great for reaching a wide audience, enjoying the fun of instant interactions, and getting valuable feedback from both fans and critics alike.

Of course, this digital world isn't all sunshine. It's super easy to get sucked into a whirlpool of distractions, losing hours that could've been spent making art or jumping into new creative projects. And then there's the constant hustle to keep posting fresh content, engaging with followers, commenting, liking, and sharing, all in an effort to stay in the spotlight. It can get pretty draining. This brings us to a big question that's got a lot of creative folks wondering: Is all the time and energy we pour into our social media really worth it in the end?

The answer to this question isn't straightforward; it's layered. Sure, social media can seriously boost exposure and help your business take off, but it's not just about posting and hoping for the best. It's about finding that perfect balance - making the most of what these platforms have to offer, without letting them eat up all your time and energy. Setting some boundaries and carving out specific times for social media can turn it from a major distraction into a powerful tool for both personal and professional growth.

Moreover, the real magic of social media for your career and personal growth boils down to what you're aiming for and how well you can use these platforms to hit those targets. It's all about finding the right balance between keeping in touch and engaging with your community, without getting swallowed up by the vast, sometimes overwhelming, digital space. Keeping this balance means you'll often need to take a step back to check on your priorities, goals, and the results you're getting from your social media efforts.

For creatives, the real trick is figuring out how to use social media as a killer promotional and engagement tool, without letting it mess with your creative style and productivity. It's not just about being smart with your social media game, but also about keeping your strategies fresh and adapting to the digital world's constant changes. This way, your creativity shines bright even in the busy online world.

So, definitely give social media a big thumbs up as an awesome tool for both personal and professional growth. Just remember, though, it's important to set some boundaries and keep things balanced. Use it to meet folks who get you, share what you're passionate about, and scoop up heaps of inspiration. But don’t forget to stay true to your own journey and the goals you're chasing. With a bit of care and regular check-ins on how it's shaping your growth, social media can be super helpful in nailing those personal and professional wins.

This week, I want to chat about something that we've probably all stumbled into at one point or another... The comparison trap.

About this time last year, after completing the Immersion course with Bonnie Christine, I found a fellow aspiring surface designer who seemed to be on a path parallel to mine. We were both navigating the transition from established professional careers to the dream of creating full-time. In a way, she became a benchmark for me, a way for me to gauge my own progress and ensure I was on the right track.

But then, life got busy, and I lost track of her for a while. When I finally checked in on her progress recently, I saw her success, and it hit me a bit harder than expected and left me feeling surprisingly deflated. She has, by what I can tell, vastly outpaced me.

It's the all too common scenario, especially in this age of social media. We end up comparing our behind-the-scenes struggles and slow progress to other people's highlight reels, forgetting that what's posted online is usually a polished version of reality. And last week, I fell into that very trap, comparing her Instagram success to my own real-life journey. And I felt like I was missing the mark for a brief moment.

But then I remembered something important. We all have our unique timelines and challenges.

When I took a moment to look back on the year, I realized just how far I've come since the beginning of my journey. My progress, while different from my peers, is significant and unique to me. It's right on track.

And just as I was pondering all this, I received a notification from Spoonflower about a sale - just ~$.50 for a swatch, but it was a sale nonetheless. It was a small reminder, perhaps a "God-wink", that I am moving in the right direction.

I'm sharing this experience not to dwell on moments of doubt, but to highlight the resilience that follows. It's important to remember that our journeys are unique - not to be compared to others' seemingly flawless paths. Social media, while great, often blurs the line between perception and reality, making it all too easy to fall into the comparison trap.

Our paths are not meant to be the same. Our journeys as artists, and as individuals, are unique and personal. And while it's natural to look at others for inspiration and guidance, we cannot let their success or progress diminish our own accomplishments and growth.

So let's celebrate our own progress, no matter how small or slow it may seem. Let's remember that success is not a one-size-fits-all concept and that the only person we should compare ourselves to is who we were yesterday.

This coming week, I challenge you (and myself) to embrace your own journey and celebrate every step, no matter how big or small. Take a moment to reflect on your progress and appreciate all that you have achieved so far.

And don't forget to support and encourage others in their own journeys, because ultimately, we are all in this together!
